Nerve Impacting Joint tissues vs Joint Tissues Impacting on Nerves will be debated live at OARSI Connect '21.
Joint pain is the primary symptom of osteoarthritis. Pain drives the patient to seek healthcare. Pain is a major driver of functional limitations and OA burden of disease. Pain is the primary symptom we as health professionals more or less successfully target with non-pharmacological treatment, with drugs or with surgery. Yet, as scientists our understanding of the mechanisms and sources of joint pain in OA, and its relationship with molecular, cellular and structural features characteristic of OA is embarrassingly incomplete. Is it the nerves talking to and impacting on joint tissues or is it the OA processes in joint tissues impacting on the nerves? Or are both processes active and important in the OA disease process and the OA experience of the patient?
